TITLE: Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association fonds

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent
Association (CCBA) was established in Victoria in 1884, and
served as main representative body for Chinese in Canada
until 1908, when the Chinese Consulate was established in
Ottawa. The CCBA's activities have included protesting
against racial discrimination, mediating in disputes over
business deals and treatment of servants, making
contribution to Chinese individuals and families in other
parts of Canada, China and Cuba, and monitoring the range of
medical care offered by Chinese hospitals in British
Columbia. In 1899, the CCBA built the Chinese Hospital in
Victoria, which later developed into a boarding house for
elderly Chinese men.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of lists of Chinese deceased in Canada,
1937; leave permits issued to the Chinese Hospital in
Vancouver, Victoria, and other areas of B.C., 1908-1909;
donation and fundraising records, subscription booklets,
records of income and expenditures, receipts, Free Miners
Certificates, national bonds, 1884-1912; population data;
correspondence from the Commander in Shanghai, 1932; minutes
of the Chinese Public School; correspondence regarding
donations for victims of famines, droughts, and floods in
China, and booklets recording donations; records of the
Chinese Hospital, including report books on patients, doctor
order books and consultation forms, 1956-1976.

be received in writing from Dr. David Lai, University of
Victoria Department of Geography for the Chinese
Consolidated Benevolent Association. Hospital records are
closed until 2040.
