TITLE: Wah Hing Land Company fonds

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Wah Hing Land Company was formed ca.
1925 from the Lung Yick Company in response to high rent
increases in Nanaimo's Chinatown. The company was a mutual
organization that purchased seven acres of land from the
Western Fuel Company on the bluffs overlooking Mount Benson
and Harewood, and sold shares to 4,000 Chinese across Canada
for five dollars each. The old Chinatown was then
dismantled and moved over the railway tracks, and erected on
the new land.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of a register, written in Chinese
characters. It includes one receipt and one application to
transfer money to the Bank of China.
