TITLE: William and Mary Cartwright fonds : 1869-1904
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 cm of textual records
DATES: [Photocopied 1991]
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: William Cartwright was from
Worcestershire, England and emigrated to Nanaimo in 1862.
Mary Findlay Cartwright was born in Nanaimo, her father
being Christopher Findlay, an accountant with the Hudson's
Bay Company in Nanaimo. She married William in Victoria in
1869, but returned to Nanaimo to live. In 1872, the
Cartwrights decided to take up farming on the southern end
of Vancouver Island at Sooke, where they lived for 46 years.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of a volume in which are recorded the
accounts (1872-1904) of William Cartwright and the personal
diary of daily activities (1882-1883) of Mary Cartwright.
Volume also includes some poems and recipes. The original
use of the volume appears to be the 1869 accounts of a
general store, possibly the Horne Store. The accounts
record many purchases by Chinese and Indians. Newsclippings
(1913-1941) have been pasted over parts of the early 1869
accounts.
