Smithers Bakery fonds

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
In the early 1900s, Mah Yak Tong established the Smithers' Bakery at 1st Avenue and Main Street in Smithers. Although called simply "Baker" by the local children, he was well-known as a citizen of the town and especially noted for his support of town projects which involved young people. He made his home in Smithers until his death in 1955. [See Bulkley Valley Stories, page 113.]. The business, also known as Wing's Chinese Bakery, was later taken over by Mah Yak Tong's nephew, Mah Wing Shek.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:
The fonds consists of a ledger [with slips of paper that were removed for conservation reasons.] The records are written in both Chinese script and in English and contain details of sales of bakery items from 1935 to 1955. The entries are not in continuous chronological order.
