ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: George Churchill Jerrett (1897-1964),
journalist, war veteran and mariner, was born at Brigus,
Newfoundland on 20 September 1897, son of Charles and Anna
(Antle) Jerrett. Jerrett married Alison Emma Mews of St.
John's, 29 September 1928. Jerrett died in New Brunswick in
1964.
Jerrett was educated at St. George's School, Brigus, and
Bishop Feild College, St. John's. During World War I, he
trained at Camp Borden, Ontario, and served with the Royal
Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. In 1924, he was hired by
the Chicago Tribune to cover news events in Labrador,
particularly those involving aviation. He was also a mariner
who navigated the Labrador Coast.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of the textual records and maps of George C.
Jerrett, primarily related to his work as the Chicago
Tribune's reporter for Labrador. Fonds includes maps,
correspondence, navigational notes, ships clearances,
personal artifacts, photographs and newspaper clippings. The
fonds also includes a humourous newsletter, with
photographs, by the members of the "Farthest North Press
Club" at Indian Harbour, Labrador and a gospel booklet in
English and Inuktitut.
Fonds was arranged in six series: 1. Labrador experiences;
2. Personal records; 3. Publications; 4. Maps and charts of
Labrador; 5. School and military Artifacts; 6. Photographs.

CUSTODIAL HISTORY: Fonds was retained by the Jerrett family and was donated to
the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador by
Jerrett's widow, Alison (Mews) Jerrett on 18 June, 1974.
LANGUAGE: English predominates. The gospel booklet is printed in
Inuktitut and English.
